Gundam Wing (1995-96), a 49-part series in the Alternate Universe continuity, scored a hit in the U.S. when it aired on the Cartoon Network. In the year 195 A.C. (After Colony), much of humanity has emigrated to orbiting Space Colonies; those who remained on Earth are governed by the oppressive United Earth Sphere Alliance. But the real power is wielded by the sinister Romefeller Foundation, whose directors plot to control Earth and the Colonies through their puppet military entity OZ, led by Zechs Marquise and Treize Khushrenada. Five teenage pilots in Gundam mecha suits strike at Earth, hoping to aid the rebel Colonists: sullen Heero Yuy, happy-go-lucky Duo Maxwell, former circus acrobat Trowa Barton, sensitive Quatre Raberba, and icy WuFei Chang. The convoluted story line pits the Romefeller Foundation, the rebellious “Treize Faction” of OZ, the Gundam Pilots, and royal pacifist Relena Peacecraft against each other. But it’s primarily a battle between the adherents of a samurai-style code of honor and the soulless adherents of realpolitik. When the Romefeller Foundation begins manufacturing Mobile Dolls (pilotless battle robots), the Gundam pilots, Zechs, and Treize object, not because they can make the Foundation all-powerful, but because they will deprive human warriors of the singular emotions experienced through heroism in battle.

The uninitiated may have trouble following the plot: strange revelations abound (e.g., Relena discovers Zechs is her long-lost brother) and characters disappear for a dozen or more episodes, only to return when a deus ex machina is needed. But Gundam fans aren’t interested in tightly woven story lines or credible character arcs, and Gundam Wing delivers plenty of battles between the splendidly designed robots. It’s a classic confrontation between good guys with invincible weapons and soulless bad guys who can’t hit the broad side of a robot. This three-part OAV adventure picks up one year after the conclusion of the Gundam Wing series. Earth and the Space Colonies have joined to form the Earth Sphere Unified Nation; after a brief reign as Queen of Earth, Relena Peacecraft/Darlian has abdicated and is serving as a government minister. The giant Gundams (the large, robotic armor suits) have been hidden or sent hurtling into the sun. This fragile peace is shattered when the sinister Dekim Barton initiates a revolt to make Mariemeia, the daughter of former Oz chief Treize Khushrenada, absolute ruler of the new world-state. She describes the change as part of History’s Endless Waltz of “peace, war, and revolution.” If Earth refuses to accept the new regime, Barton will crash one of the orbiting colonies into the planet’s surface. Only the Gundam pilots can resolve this crisis–with a little help from their friends and former enemies; writer Katsuyuki Sumisawa uses the lulls in the action to explore their early lives in flashbacks. This special-edition DVD includes both the three-part OAV series and the compilation feature, which contains about eight minutes of additional animation. The extras include a “Mobile Suit Encyclopedia” with information about the five Gundams and the Tallgeese. The OVA episodes are: 1. “Silent Orbit,” 2. “Operation Meteor,” 3. “Return to Eternity.” Rated 13 Up for violence, largely restricted to machines attacking each other. The End is At Hand! When the White Fang ship Libra refuses to change course away from Earth, Quatre and the others are forced to set Peacemillion on a collision course in an attempt to save the planet! As Wu Fei finally confronts his own personal battle – Each of the other Gundam pilots fights furiously with the lives of the Earth at stake! The ultimate clash between Heero and Zechs is finally at hand… but can there only be just one victor?

Relena and Heero have come aboard the Libra in a last-ditch hope to talk some sense into Zechs, but he will not listen. Treize and his forces arrive, and Treize challenges Zechs to a one on one duel to decide the fate of the ware, but Zechs refuses, having cast aside such notions as “honor” and “chivalry”. Now the immense ships Libra and Peacmillion are on a collision course with one another, and the resulting collision could destroy all life on Earth.
