Hot-tempered 15-year-old Ichigo Kurosaki, the hero of the popular fantasy-adventure Bleach (2004), has the unsettling ability to see spirits who are unable to rest in peace. His sixth sense leads him to Rukia, a Soul Reaper who destroys Hollows (soul-devouring monsters) and ensures the deceased find repose with the Soul Society. A graver challenge arrives when a supernatural assassin takes Rukia back to the Soul Society, where she faces execution for sharing her powers with a mortal. Urahara (”Hat and Clogs Guy”) tells Ichigo it may be possible to save Rukia, and puts him on a grueling training regimen. Ichigo learns to unleash his latent powers, while Chad and Ohime prepare to accompany him under the tutelage of Yoruichi, Urahara’s talking cat. As the season ends, Urahara constructs an inter-dimensional portal that links Earth to the Soul Society for seven minutes: can the high school students save Rukia and return in time? Director Noriyuke Abe ably juggles dynamic swordfights, emotional scenes, and slapstick comedy. Ichigo may act like a jerk at times, but the filmmakers and voice actor Johnny Yong Bosch imbue the character with unusual depth. Ichigo can simultaneously express impatience at and compassion for a “Mod Soul,” a disposable artificial entity created by the Soul Society. As the second season of Dragon Ball GT gets under way, Goku is still battling Baby, the last survivor of the Tuffle (originally Tsufrulian) race. It’s a relief to the galaxy when Goku’s Ultimate Kamehameha Blast sends Baby’s ship into the sun. Once Baby’s been dispatched, the filmmakers seem to lose their way. The Z Fighters evacuate all the residents of Earth to the Tuffle Planet before the Black Dragon Balls cause the Earth to explode, but the Namekian Dragon Balls restore the planet before anyone’s had a chance to miss it. The remainder of the season plays like a “greatest hits” album. Dr. Gero, Frieza, Cell, and Android 17 from seasons 3, 4, and 5 of Dragon Ball Z reappear and are defeated again. Goku reverts to his little boy form, which makes him appear younger than his granddaughter Pan. It seems Goku and his friends have used the Dragon Balls too many times: all the good things they’ve wished for have been balanced by huge amounts of negative energy retained in the Balls, which crack, releasing the seven nasty Shadow Dragons. Goku and Pan fight them, first one by one, then as a fused super-dragon. Also included is A Hero’s Legacy, which aired as a television special in 1997. Set 100 years after the conclusion of Dragon Ball GT, it stars Pan’s grandson “Goku, Jr.” as a wimpy little boy who’s just discovering his Saiyan powers. The special may have been an attempt to revive the franchise yet again, but after more than 500 TV episodes and 13 features, Akira Toriyama’s saga of the enchanted Dragon Balls finally concludes with Legacy. At the end of its seventh season, the Ranma 1/2 broadcast series concluded with its 161st episode. Although the filmmakers’ imaginations were clearly flagging at times, this final collection offers very funny and oddly touching moments. The gentler side of the characters emerges in “Run Away with Me,” as an old man revisits his lost youth with girl-type Ranma. “Meet You in the Milky Way” plays off the Asian sky myth of the Weaver Princess and the Cowherd. Princess Ori and Kengyu the herder visit Earth as martial artists, although the story may be a dream of Akane’s. In “Mushroom Temple,” Ranma and Akane inadvertently eat “love mushrooms”–and decide to marry. The perpetually quarreling duo addressing each other as “pretty baby” and “honey” may set a new standard for improbable humor, although Kuno, Ryoga, and Mousse turn their love feast into a free-for-all. More typical are the slapstick incidents: ghost cat Mao Mo Lin busts up a seaside beauty pageant and falls for Tsubasa, not recognizing his true gender. Nabiki and Sasuke sell scandalous photographs of “the pigtailed girl” to Kuno. Ryoga discovers the “Lion Roar Blast” technique, which grows more powerful as the practitioner grows more depressed, forcing him and Ranma to stage a misery contest. Rumiko Takahashi’s Ranma 1/2 ranks among the undisputed classics of anime, and few animated series can match the chaotic hilarity of its more inspired moments.
