Ranma 1/2 – Ranma Forever – Kiss Me, Cat

Anime DVD Presents:
Ranma 1/2 - Ranma Forever - Kiss Me, Cat (Vol. 3)

Amazon.com

Magic and the supernatural dominate these misadventures. Mao Mo Lin, the feline specter from “My Fiancé, the Cat,” returns, determined to wed Shampoo. Ranma is forced to face the one thing he fears: cats. The rarely seen gentle side of the gender-bending hero emerges in “Run Away with Me,” as an eerie old man revisits his lost youth with girl-type Ranma. The “Mushroom Temple” adventure ranks as one of the zaniest in the series: Ranma and Akane inadvertently eat “love mushrooms”–and decide to marry. The love feast degenerates into a smackdown when Kuno, Ryoga, and Mousse butt in. Things eventually get sorted out–as much as anything ever gets sorted out in this nutty series. But the perpetually quarreling Ranma and Akane addressing each other as “pretty baby” and “honey” sets a new standard for improbability. (Unrated: suitable for ages 12 and older: slapstick violence, alcohol use, mild risqué humor) –Charles Solomon

Ranma 1/2 – Ranma Forever – Battle for Miss Beachside

Anime DVD Presents:
Ranma 1/2 - Ranma Forever - Battle for Miss Beachside (Vol. 6)

Amazon.com

Ghosts from the past–literally in some cases–return to upset the Tendo household in this installment of the Ranma OVA series. First, Ranma and Akane have to bail out Sentaro of the Daimonji Martial Arts Tea School yet again. Class ghoul Gosunkugi falls in love with the lovely ghost of Kogane in a surprisingly gentle tale of firefly-crossed lovers. Pandemonium reigns at the seashore when the entire cast arrives for an improbable beauty contest: Akane, Shampoo, Ukyo, Tsubasa, and girl-type Ranma are the contestants; Ryoga and Mousse (as P-chan and duck) are the prizes. Further complications arise when the Ghost Cat appears and chases Tsubasa, not knowing the object of his affection is really a guy. The dubbed script misses the Cat’s Some Like It Hot response, “Nobody’s perfect,” but it appears in the subtitles. (Rated 13 and older: cartoon violence, mild risqué humor) –Charles Solomon

Ranma 1/2 Ranma Forever: Bring It On

Ranma 1/2 Ranma Forever: Bring It On

Amazon.com
These episodes focus primarily on upperclassman Kuno, the self-proclaimed “Blue Thunder of Furinken High.” Seishu High cheerleader Mariko sabotages a volleyball match, reducing Akane to tears. Ranma vows revenge, which means he has to outdo Mariko at leading cheers for Kuno during a kendo match. Akane finds the winning strategy in Martial Arts Cheerleading for Dummies; Kuno declares his love for her, Mariko, and “the pig-tailed girl.” While rummaging through the family mansion, Kuno and Saisuke discover a drum with awesome destructive powers. Kuno merrily blasts away until Kodachi presents an equally powerful lute to Furinken’s nutty principal. They give new meaning to the term “battle of the bands,” then Akane squelches them by calling Ranma a jerk at full volume. Kuno’s impressions of a Kabuki musician are funny, but this collection ranks among the weaker entries in the series. (Rated 13 and older: brief nudity, risqué humor) –Charles Solomon

Product Description
It?s not easy being a teenaged martial artist named Ranma Saotome, but it?s even worse when your martial artist father Genma takes you from home at an early age to a training ground known as JUSENKYO, where falling into one of the many springs instantly turns you into whoever or whatever drowned their last. In Bring It ON!, having learned (or been the victim of) almost any martial arts style imaginable, Ranma?s nevertheless about to learn a whole new one: Martial Arts Cheerleading! Sure, Ranma?s got the basic moves down, and that uniform is really cute, but then it turns out that it?s Kuno?s kendo match he has to cheer for. Meanwhile, during an annual cleaning of the estate, Kuno comes across an ancient taiko drum that?s got the devastating power of a howitzer.

Ranma 1/2 – Ranma Forever – From Depths of Despair

Anime DVD Presents:
Ranma 1/2 - Ranma Forever - From Depths of Despair (Vol. 2)

Amazon.com

When a sudden shower transforms Ranma into Ranma-chan (his female alter ego), Sentaro kidnaps her, incongruously riding through town on a horse. Unaware of Ranma-chan’s true identity, he plans to train her in the rigors of the martial arts tea ceremony, which she’ll use to defeat his sinister grandmother, enabling them to marry(!). When Akane shows up to rescue Ranma, Sentaro shifts his affections, but Akane’s attempts at making tea prove disastrous. (Ranma fans know Akane should never be allowed near cooking utensils.) Ranma dukes it out with Grandmama as the episode stumbles to a close that can scarcely be called a conclusion.

Akane is called on to save the honor of the Anything Goes Tendo Dojo when she’s matched against a diminutive student from the Good Ol’ Days School of Martial Arts. Tops, beanbags, and a cat’s cradle become dangerous weapons in this curious duel. Akane and the rest of the Tendo household find they agree with the Good Ol’ Days philosophy of preserving old-fashioned toys and games in the era of Pokémon. Needless to say, all ends happily–setting the stage for the crises that inevitably occur whenever and wherever Ranma and his friends appear.

Rated 13 and older for mild sexual humor. –Charles Solomon

Ranma 1/2 – Ranma Forever – Initiation Nite

without comments

Anime DVD Presents:
Ranma 1/2 - Ranma Forever - Initiation Nite (Vol. 1)

Product Description

Three new episodes await, beginning with “Tatewaki Kuno, Substitute Principal” in which the principal is off on an inspection tour, and he’s put his seventeen-year-old son, Tatewaki Kuno, in charge. As they say, the coco-nutcase never falls far from the tree. In “Ranma’s Greatest Challenge!?”, Ranma is told the Tendo Dojo will lose its successor if he doesn’t win, so Ranma trains hard for an upcoming contest. But “kick-the-can” may be just another way to say “kick-the-Ranma!” It’s really just thuggery, Tendo Dojo-style. Then, in “Nihao! Jusenkyo Guide,” he claims he’s on a sightseeing tour, but surely the Jusenkyo Guide hasn’t come all the way from China just for that. Could his surprise visit have something to do with Ranma and Genma’s mishap at Jusenkyo Spring?
