In both the third and fourth Dragon Ball Z movies, Tree of Might (Chikuu Marugoto Chou-kessen, “Earth’s Ultimate Deciding Battle”) and Lord Slug (Suupaa Saiya-jin da Son Gokuu, “This is the Super Saiya-jin Son Goku”), menaces from outer space threaten to destroy the Earth. Tullece, one of the few surviving Saiyans, and his gang sow the seeds of the monstrous Shinseijo plant in Tree of Might. If the Shinseijo reaches maturity, it will drain all the water, nutrients, and life energy from the Earth and store them in its fruit–which Tullece will consume to make himself even more powerful. The title character in Lord Slug is the last of a race of “super Namekians,” who arrives in a ship that resembles a small planet and bullies Gohan and Bulma into getting him the Dragon Balls to obtain eternal youth. The newly regenerated Slug begins to “terrafreeze” Earth, killing its inhabitants and transforming it into a gargantuan space vessel. Goku takes down both villains in duels-to-the-finish, with some help from Gohan and the other Z-Fighters. The features last about an hour apiece, and feel more like TV specials than theatrical films. Both are just business as usual for the Z-Fighters, but that’s what Dragon Ball Z fans expect. The viewer has a choice of the English dub with the original score or new, obtrusive rock music, or Japanese dialogue and music. The Tree of Might:

The Earth’s destruction lies dormant within a single, solitary seed. A plant designed to drain the energy of a planet, it steals the very essence of life only to blossom in death and desolation. Unable to fell this mighty threat, Goku and the Z Warriors must instead confront the harbinger of the evil, a Saiyan bearing an uncanny resemblance to our hero – Turles. This new enemy kidnaps Gohan and sets the son against the father, a tragedy which only delays the inevitable fight. As Goku finally faces off against his deplorable double, Turles turns to the thieving tree…

Lord Slug:

Once again called upon to save their planet from disaster, Goku and Krillin race to head off a giant asteroid on a collision course with Earth. The threat deflected, their home is saved… Or is it? A greater menace looms in the shadows, a being so evil that he was banished from his old world and now seeks to create a new one of his own. Lord Slug, prepared to dominate by freezing all opposition, seeks out the seven Dragon Balls. Fully restored to youth and more powerful than ever, the Z Warriors soon prove no match for this ancient enemy, a Namekian with abilities from lore and legend. As Goku falls, another must step up before all is lost.

After Shenglong grants him eternal life, Garlic, Jr., seeks to destroy Kami and avenge his father in The Dead Zone. When it becomes apparent he can’t withstand the combined power of Kami and the Z-Fighters, Garlic creates a “Dead Zone,” a sort of black hole that threatens to engulf everyone and everything. Gohan defeats him, turning the gift of eternal life into a terrible curse. Goku wisely decides not to tell Chichi about Gohan’s newly discovered powers. In The World’s Strongest, the Z-fighters are pitted against a resurrected mad scientist (rendered variously as Dr. Willow, Wheelo, or Uilo) and his hench-creatures. Goku asks the Earth’s inhabitants to lend him the energy needed to destroy the evil genius. Both films feel like TV specials: Dead Zone is only 40 minutes long, World’s Strongest, an hour. The evil doctor must seek out a body on Earth that is as strong as his mind is amazing! Dr. Kochin and his android henchmen kidnap Piccolo and Master Roshi to determine who is the most powerful fighter on Earth!

Goku, Gohan and Krillin rush into action to save their friends, but Dr. Wheelo’s minions are more than a match for them in battle. It looks grim when Piccolo falls under the disembodied villain’s control, and Wheelo’s next target for mental domination? Goku! Will our heroes keep their wits about them long enough to be victorious or will they lose their minds?
